Why Book Covers Matter Before the First Page

A book cover is a proposition. It tells the reader what kind of attention the book is asking for—quiet, urgent, playful, reflective—before a single sentence is read.

The useful starting point is not a favorite color or a fashionable visual effect. It is a brief about the manuscript, genre, audience and the relationship between this book and the shelves around it.

Typography and image should work together without explaining everything. A cover can create a question that the text answers. It can also leave space for the reader’s imagination.

A strong design is tested at different scales, including a small digital thumbnail. Legibility, contrast, spine information and production limits are part of the concept, not afterthoughts.
